Sydney’s Guest Houses offer Great Locations at Affordable Prices

Cremorne Manor is located in one of Sydney's prime harborfront suburbs

Cremorne Manor has a terrific location just near a Sydney Harbourside park

Have you ever considered how nice it would be to live like a local by staying in one of Sydney’s harborside or beachfront suburbs? Believe it or not there are a number of affordable guest houses offering accommodation overlooking Sydney Harbour or down the road from the beach? These ere are four delightful guesthouses that make Sydney’s flash (and expensive) CBD hotels look rather sterile.

Bondi Beach House

Just a short stroll down a quiet residential street from all the action on Bondi Beach, the classy peach stucco Bondi Beach House, tucked behind frangipani and bougainvillea trees, offers three suites, four double rooms (two with shared bath) and two single rooms all decorated in beachy chic style. There’s an airy kitchen and breakfast room and spacious front and back decks where you can relax all day long. And there are splendid works of art from some of Australia’s finest artists including Brett Whiteley, Charles Blackman and Olive Cotton plus a terrific selection of books and videos too.

The Bondi Beach House is filled with original artwork by some of Australia's most famous painters

Prices range from $120 for a single room with a shared bath to $330 for a suite with kitchenette and sofa. Make-it-yourself breakfast is included.

Nearby: Go for a swim at Bondi, do the Bondi to Coogee Walk, or hang out at great nearby cafes like Gusto Espresso Bar and Gertrude and Alice Café Bookstore. Some terrific local restaurants include Lox, Stock and Barrel, Da Orazio Pizza and Porchetta, and Brown Sugar.

Insider tip: Get here by cab or public transport as parking is difficult.

Glenferrie Lodge

Down the road from Kirribilli House, Glenferrie Lodge is a 19th century heritage guesthouse tucked into the leafy environs of this harborside suburb. It has 68 single, double, triple and family rooms, most of which have shared bathrooms. Evocative Sydney photographs adorn the walls. There is free Wi-Fi, a grassy back garden with chairs for relaxing and a terrific little playground for kids. And there are even a number of pet friendly rooms. An extensive hot buffet breakfast is served in the spacious dining area and a computer and washer/dryer are available for guest use.

Glenferrie Hill Lodge even has pet friendly rooms

Prices range from $80 for a single economy room with shared bath to $300 for a five-person family suite. Most rooms are around $130 and all include a full cooked buffet breakfast.

Nearby: It’s just a short walk to the Kirribilli ferry terminal which sports the Anvil Coffee Company. Take in a play at nearby harbor-front Ensemble Theatre Company. A few blocks away is the pretty Kirribilli shopping area where you can get a terrific coffee at Bacino Espresso, an inspired cocktail at The Botanist, or a cheap pizza at Pizzeria Rio.

Cremorne Point Manor

Cremorne Point Manor is located in a restored 19th century Federation building on a quiet residential street. Most of the 29 modern guest rooms are not large but offer all the amenities you need including free Wi-Fi and flip flops perfect for a Sydney summer’s day. An upstairs guest balcony overlooks Sydney Harbour. Enjoy a continental breakfast in the sunny breakfast room and there is an upstairs guest lounge with small kitchen, washer/dryer and computer. Prices range from $99 for a single room with a shared shower to $249 for a spacious harbor-view suite. Most ensuite rooms are around $150 and all include a continental breakfast.

Cremorne Point Manor is close to harborside parks.

Nearby: Just across the road you can access the bucolic Cremorne Point Foreshore Walk where you can enjoy the terrific harbour views and check out all the Federation Arts and Crafts-style homes. Have a swim at the heritage Maccallum harbourside pool. Sophie’s Place Kiosk is a great spot for coffee and pastry at the Cremorne Ferry Wharf. Enjoy a drink and a bite to eat at the private Mosman Rowers Club (you can sign yourself in as a guest).

 Dive Hotel

Dive Hotel is a sleek-lined stylish modern boutique hotel overlooking Coogee Beach. There are cosy standard rooms, larger king rooms, a secluded bamboo-fringed balcony room with district views, and three ocean view rooms. All have free Wi Fi, kitchenette with microwave and fridge, digital televisions and air conditioning. A spacious breakfast area with a large wooden table and a shady terrace is perfect spot to chat with other guests over a do-it-yourself continental breakfast. Prices start at $225 for the smallest room and go to $420 for a premier ocean view room.

Nearby: The Dive Hotel is directly across the road from Coogee Beach. Along the coastal walk to the south, go for a swim in the historic saltwater Wylie’s Baths and (Australia’s last remaining) women’s only McIvers Baths. In the other direction, enjoy the Coogee to Bondi Cliff Walk. Dozens of cheap cafes and restaurants line the Coogee waterfront.
